Spreading over a total area of 7,073 sq km, Rayagada is divided into eleven blocks. As per the 2001 census, the district houses a total population of 8,23,000 and it has a population density of 116 persons per sq km. Also the literacy rate of Rayagada is 35.61%. The district generates income mainly through agriculture based activities. Paddy, wheat, ragi, mung, biri, ground nut, potato and maize are the major crops grown in the area. The central attractions of the district are temple of Ma Majhighariani, Laxminarayan temple, Hatipathar, Chatikona, Devagiri and Minajhola.
Hati Pathar: Hatipathar waterfall is situated near Rayagada. The natural surrounding of this place is excellent.
Minajhola: Minajhola is 390 km from Bhubaneswar a place of attraction for its scenic beauty and the confluence of three rivers and the Shiva Temple.
Maa Majhighariani Temple: It is only the face of the Maa Majhi Ghariani is worshiped.
Chatikona: 48 Kms from Rayagada surrounded by valleys, hills and the temple of Mahadev. It offers picnickers gorgeous view of the waterfall.
Devagiri: It is 50 KMs from Rayagada. The Devagiri hill (120.2 meters). The top of the hill is a flat platform of rectangular plain. At the top of the hill, there are perennial poles of water called Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, Bhargavi and Indradyumna. There is a cave looking like two Jaws, The Siva Lingam is enshrined at the meeting point of the Jaws.
Padmapur: It is 90Kms from Rayagada. It has the Manikeswari Siva Temple. It is the seat of Dharmakirti, the Budhist-Logician-philosopher.
